Does software built with AI have to look generic?

The short answer

No. AI doesn’t force a cookie-cutter look. The real question is whether custom design is worth paying for in your case. For customer-facing software it often is. For software your own team uses every day, a clean standard layout is usually the better choice: familiar, easy to use, and cheaper.

Where the generic look comes from

A lot of software built quickly with AI looks the same, because nobody made a decision about how it should look. AI falls back on the most common layout it has seen. That’s a choice by default, not a limit of the tools.

Design is a decision. Make it on purpose, and AI builds that just as quickly.

When custom design is worth it

Usually when customers see it:

  • A customer portal, an online quote or a booking page, where it stands for your business.
  • When the way you look is part of why customers pick you.
  • When the screen has to work for people who have never seen it before and won’t read instructions.

When a standard layout is the better choice

For software your own team uses every day, such as scheduling, orders or job tracking, what matters is that it’s clear, quick and hard to get wrong. Standard layouts are standard because people already know how they work. Nobody needs training to find the search box or the save button.

There, a well-made standard layout is an advantage, not a compromise. It’s faster to build, cheaper, and easier for a new hire on day one.

Most businesses have both

A common setup is a clean, standard layout for the screens your team works in, and a custom design for the pages your customers see. We ask early which is which, so the budget goes where it shows.
