How long does it take to build custom software?

Why it’s weeks now, not months

A few years ago, a custom system for a small business took six months or more, which is a big part of why only large companies had one. AI now helps write the code, so the building goes much faster. The thinking about how your business works still takes the time it takes, and that’s the part that decides whether the software fits.

What happens, step by step

• We learn how you run things. For something complex, we come and watch the business running. For something simpler, a phone call does it.
• We write it down: a plain plan of what it will do and what it won’t. You review it and sign off.
• You see it working. A first version is usually up two or three weeks after you sign, sometimes one.
• We finish it together. You try it on real work, we change what doesn’t fit, and we finish the details.
• It goes live, on hosting in your own account.

What makes it take longer

Usually it isn’t the building. It’s these:

• Waiting on decisions. If nobody can say how a job should be approved, the screen for it waits too.
• Old data. Moving years of inconsistent spreadsheets in takes cleaning first.
• Other systems. A connection to a supplier’s system depends on how quickly they answer.
• Doing everything at once. Five processes take longer than one, and are harder to get right.

How to get it sooner

Start with the one process that hurts most, and name one person on your side who can answer questions and make the calls. Send real examples early: a filled-in order, last month’s spreadsheet, a typical email. Real examples answer questions a meeting can’t.
